Empire ISIS (true name Miriam Moufide, also stage-named The Gangstress) is a singer, songwriter and social activist based in Montreal, Canada.^[1] Her musical style has been described as a blend of dancehall, reggae, hip hop, pop and World music. She is signed to Monumental Records and distributed by Universal Music Group.

Early life[link]

Born in Wales to a Moroccan father and British mother, she was raised in Morocco. At age 7 she moved to Montreal, where she lived with her 2 brothers, mother and Ugandan/Yemeni stepfather.^[2]

At the age of 16, Moufide moved to Costa Rica for school and began a four year trip around the world, living with small and marginalised communities.^[3] Her love for music and anthropology led her to visit and live in 30 different countries, and to eventually put her experiences to music.^[2]

Activism and Charity[link]

At 21 while in the Amazon rainforest attending the Bumba Meu Boi festival, she met members of the Rainbow Caravan for Peace and joined them as they visited indigenous villages and festivals. Drawing on her education in theatre, music and workshop facilitation she worked with them performing in street theatre and giving workshops on bioregionalism, permaculture, ecovillage design, nutrition and spiritual gatherings.^[4] Her lyrics often focus on social matters like women’s rights (“NANA Power”), building community (“Participate”) and defending your dreams ("Get up on it", "Won't surrender").^[5]

The artist tries to use her international recognition to draw attention to issues that matter to her, by hosting and performing charitable events,^[6] especially in her home cities of Montreal^[7][8] and New York.

The song S.O.S. To Freedom is currently being used in a campaign against human trafficking across the United States.^[9] You can also find her NANA Power song utilized in the Girls Action Foundation's, Light a Spark cause.^[10]

Musical career[link]

Moufide, having taken the stage name Empire ISIS, began making music while traveling in Jamaica, working with the legendary Jamaican musicians Dean Fraser and Chinna Smith, as well as Miami-based producers The Iconz. She recorded her debut album “Empress Gangstress” in part at Bob Marley's legendary Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston. It featured reggae singers Bushman and Half Pint. Empire ISIS has played in over 20 different countries, including Brazil, Panama, Columbia, Venezuela, Senegal and Canada^[11] and the American festivals SXSW and CMJ.^[12]

On her more recent albums, Empire ISIS has worked and recorded with world-renowned producers like Prayon^[13] and Kovas. As well as songwriting for Empire ISIS, she also writes under the name Miriam Moufide for other musicians and is published by Cherry Lane Music and pigFACTORY Music.

In June 2011, Empire ISIS was voted into the "Wall of Fame" at the Montreal Hip Hop Summit and is now featured in the Montreal deck of "Legend Of The Fame" hip hop trading cards.^[14]

Adrian Dix is a Canadian politician, serving as the MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway in British Columbia and as leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party.^[1] He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 2005 provincial election.

Dix was born in Vancouver to parents Ken and Hilda, immigrants from Ireland and Britain, respectively. His parents ran the Dix Insurance Agency Ltd. on West 41st Avenue in Vancouver. Growing up in Vancouver, Dix was raised as an Anglican and attended Point Grey Secondary in the 1980s. He then went on to study history and political science at the University of British Columbia. Dix has two siblings, including a brother who is a businessman and entrepreneur, living in East Vancouver. In early March 2012 Dix was briefly questioned by Skytrain staff and let go with a warning for riding the Skytrain without a copy of the daypass fare he had allegedly purchased earlier in the day.^[2] Dix lives in Vancouver with his wife Renée Saklikar, a poet and writer.^[3]

Dix is known for keeping in shape in order to manage his Type-1 diabetes, with which he was diagnosed in his 20s.

Career[link]

Fluently bilingual, Dix lived in France as a young man and then worked in Ottawa for NDP MP Ian Waddell. He then worked as the executive director of Canadian Parents for French in B.C./Yukon. Then from 1996 to 1999, he served as Chief of Staff to Premier Glen Clark. He was forced to resign from that position after it was revealed that he had produced a memo and then back-dated it while marking it with an official Executive Office of the Premier stamp in an effort to make it appear that Clark had instructed him to keep him at arms-length from the process of awarding casino licences, something Dix has repeatedly apologized for.^[4]

Member of the Legislative Assembly[link]

Since 2005, Dix has served as the MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway. He first served as the opposition critic for Children and Families and then served as the Health critic.^[5] He served his constituents by opposing the closing of Carleton Elementary School.^[6]

2011 NDP leadership race[link]

The last candidate to publicly launch his leadership bid, Dix campaigned on a platform of eliminating the HST, rolling back reductions in the corporate tax rate, supporting the redirection of carbon tax revenue to pay for public transit and infrastructure that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supporting an increase in the minimum wage rate to $10 per hour, creating a provincial child care system, restoring grants to the post-secondary students, reducing interest on student loans, and restoring the corporation capital tax on financial institutions.^[7][8][9]

His candidacy was endorsed by former interim BC NDP leader Joy McPhail, amongst others. Dix's campaign for the leadership sparked controversy when campaign workers showed up at the headquarters of the party at the cut-off for new memberships with thousands of membership forms and bags of cash.^[10] Five of the six other leadership candidates filed formal complaints after video emerged of NDP MLA Mable Elmore stapling $10 bills to the forms.^[11]

Dix ultimately won the BC NDP leadership vote in the third and final round against Mike Farnworth, garnering 52% of the vote.^[12]

Jane Sterk is the leader of the Green Party of British Columbia, a candidate in the Esquimalt-Royal Roads riding in the 2009 British Columbia provincial election, and a business professor at University Canada West. She was elected leader of the provincial Green Party in October 2007, and elected councillor in the Township of Esquimalt in 2005. She had participated in the 2004 federal election and the 2005 provincial election as a candidate in the Esquimalt ridings, placing fourth and third with 9% and 10% of the vote, respectively.

Before moving to Esquimalt in 1997, Sterk had lived in Edmonton. She earned a doctorate from the University of Alberta in counseling psychology and worked for Edmonton Public Schools and the Edmonton Board of Health. In 1983 she co-founded a business, Softwarehouse West, with a co-worker from the Board of Health. She sold computers, hardware, software, and related services until she retired to Esquimalt in 1997 intending to purchase a boat and sail recreationally.

Before politics[link]

Jane Sterk was born and raised in Edmonton with her father who worked as the dean of education at the University of Alberta, and a mother who was a pianist.^[1] At 20 years old, in 1967, she married a man named John who went on to become a lawyer and author.^[1] Together they raised two sons. Sterk worked as a school teacher for Edmonton Public Schools for seven years.^[2] At the University of Alberta, she earned a master's degree in education and a doctorate in counseling psychology.^[3] She opened a private psychologist practice and work for the Edmonton Board of Health. In 1983, at 36 years old, she opened a computer store, Softwarehouse West, with Gary Ford, a co-worker from the Edmonton Board of Health.^[4] After a difficult first year, the business grew.^[5] By 1990 they employed 33 others, had $6 million in annual revenue, and had won the 1989 Alberta Small Business Owners of the Year from the Chamber of Commerce.^[4][5] In 1992 the business split off its information management section with Sterk heading new the company, USConnect Edmonton.^[2] After working for another five years, Sterk and her husband retired in 1997 and moved to Esquimalt, British Columbia with the intention of sailing around the world. The couple purchased a boat and trained how to sail. They sailed in 1999 and passed Cape Flattery off the coast of Washington before turning back due to seasickness.^[3] After further preparation, they successfully sailed to Mexico and back in 2001.^[6]

Politics[link]

Sterk got involved in Green Party politics following her trip to Mexico where she witnessed ocean pollution and rapid development causing environmental and social damage.^[6] She understood that sustainable and responsible development could have avoided the damage.^[1] While she had never belonged to a political party before, and had previously voted for parties across the political spectrum depending upon specific candidates, she joined the Green Party in 2001.^[1] She ran as the Green Party of Canada's candidate in the 2004 federal election for the Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca riding where she came in fourth of six candidates, garnering 9.2% of the vote. She was the Green Party of British Columbia's candidate in the May 2005 provincial election in the Esquimalt-Metchosin riding. Of the four candidates in the riding she placed third with 10.4% of the vote. Later that year she ran for seat on the Township of Esquimalt's city council. As a councilor she supported pedestrian rights, urban farming, and using biofuels in the city vehicle fleet.^[7] She served as alternate director at the Capital Regional District. While she supported the construction of a regional sewage treatment plant, she, along with the other Esquimalt councilors, opposed locating plant along the waterfront at Esquimalt's Macaulay Point.^[8]

She served her three year term as councilor while accepting a faculty position teaching business administration at University Canada West and becoming leader of the Green Party of British Columbia.^[9] She took over for Christopher Bennett had been the interim leader of the party since the previous leader, Adriane Carr, left in September 2006 to become deputy leader of the national party. The party held a leadership vote during its annual convention in Victoria in October 2007. Competing for the leadership position against Sterk were small business owner Damian Kettlewell and filmmaker Ben West, both residents of Vancouver, community activist Jack Etkin of Victoria, and Bowen Island oceanographer Silvaine Zimmermann.^[10] Using the preferential ballot, Sterk won with West coming in second and Kettlewell third.^[11] As leader she set party priorities to increase membership, raise funds for the 2009 provincial election, and open a party office in Victoria.^[6][9] She participated in the October 2008 provincial by-election in Vancouver-Fairview but came in third with 7.2% of the popular vote. For the 2009 provincial election she ran in Esquimalt-Royal Roads the riding where she resides, she placed third behind the NDP and the BC Liberals.^[12][13]

Martin Callanan (born 8 August 1961) is a British Conservative Party politician. He has been a Member of the European Parliament for the North East England constituency since 1999, and was re-elected in 2004 and 2009.^[1]

Callanan was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. Before becoming an MEP, he stood as a parliamentary candidate for Washington (in the 1987 election), Gateshead East (in the 1992 election), and Tynemouth (in the 1997 election).^[2]

He vehemently opposed the erection of the "Angel of the North" sculpture by Antony Gormley.^[3]

Before his election to the European Parliament, Callanan worked as a project engineer at Scottish and Newcastle breweries and holds a BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Newcastle Polytechnic.^[4] Callanan was the last Conservative member of Gateshead Borough Council, before standing down in 1996. He is a member of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. Callanan is a regular contributor to ConservativeHome, writing a monthly report.^[5]
